You Want Great Skin, Hair, and Nails.
You Deserve Great Information.
Once you learn a certain amount, it’s time to start teaching. My patients get so much of their health-related information online, but what they read, watch, or listen to doesn’t always come from an expert.
I believe doctors should embrace current media norms and trends in order to meet people where they are. That doesn’t mean we all have to dance on TikTok or create catchy Instagram reels. It just means we should be willing to step out of the exam room and into the public square.
When I’m searching for information online about a subject in which I’m not an expert, I want to find information from someone who is. Sometimes it’s free. Sometimes I pay for it. Regardless, it should be accurate and should come from a credible expert.
For instance, if I want to learn about ways to improve the health of my immune system, I want to hear from credible experts in immunology, inflammation, nutrition, and so on.
In my case, I feel fortunate because my area of expertise is dermatology, and people tend to care deeply about their skin, hair, and nails (don’t get me started on hair — it’s a big deal!).
Credible and accurate information about these topics should be easy to find and fun to consume. And it should be actionable for those looking to transform their health. This site is part of my effort to make that a reality.
About me
I’m a board-certified dermatologist.
I also love dogs, so my girl, Pippa, gets her own section in the header and footer of my site.
I earned my BS in Biology from Haverford College and then my MD and PhD from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and completed his dermatology residency at Stanford University.
I’m a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD, a member of the AAD’s Media Expert Team, and am active in the National Eczema Association (NEA) and the Foundation for Research and Education in Dermatology (FRED).
I’ve met a lot of people who were not happy with the last dermatologist they saw. I get it. I see you.
In my medical practice, I strive to go beyond topical creams and 5-minute visits to help frustrated people regain control of their skin and hair and feel seen again.
Whether you’re a depressed, anxious teenager struggling with cystic acne or a high functioning professional who feels handcuffed at work by your constantly flaking skin or sweating palms, I want to guide you towards meeting your health goals and transforming your life.
Through actively listening to my clients and their family members and explaining diagnosis and treatment options in a detailed but easy to understand manner, I collaborate with you to formulate a realistic and actionable plan based on shared decision making and cutting-edge treatment modalities.
I’m passionate about combining conventional western medicine (the stuff most U.S.-trained dermatologists learn in medical school and residency) with the principles of functional medicine (lifestyle factors, root causes, focus on bio-individuality) to help people who need more than a 5-minute fix to their skin, hair, or nail disease.
The value I can provide in a conventional setting is limited by the number of appointments available in a day and the many challenges facing insurance-dependent medical practices.
Additionally, there simply aren’t enough board-certified dermatologists to satisfy the current demand.
That’s why I built LewellisMD where I publish credible information about dermatology and share my views about the business of medicine, entrepreneurship, and the emerging model of direct specialty care, which is an alternative to the constrained, confusing, and costly world of insurance-dependent specialty care.
I’m also building a virtual direct care dermatology institute where I’ll be delivering a hospitable, integrative, thoughtful brand of dermatology that will pleasantly surprise and delight you. We all know healthcare needs more of that.
Whether you’re waiting in that 4-month queue to finally see the one dermatologist in your town (or the town 90-minutes away…) or you’re simply curious about why all your hair is suddenly falling out, I want to be here for you.
