Becoming A Toastmaster: Here’s To Mastering The Art of Communication!

On September 21, 2023, I became a Toastmaster in an effort to improve my communication skills, meet new people, and have some fun.

This is the start of something, not the culmination.

Communication skills are of paramount importance for any business owner and leader. If you don’t actively work to improve your communication skills, you will sell less and serve fewer.

The more you work at this, the more prepared you become, and the more excitement replaces anxiety when it’s your time to speak.

You’ve probably thought to yourself at one point or another, “Wow, that person is such a natural speaker.” Think again.

We are all born with intrinsic gifts, and some of us have unique limitations or challenges, but this is an area where intentional practice, hard work, and being willing to spend time in discomfort is enough to move the needle.

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that builds confidence and teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of clubs that meet online and in person.

In a supportive community or corporate environment, members prepare and deliver speeches, respond to impromptu questions, and give and receive constructive feedback.

It is through this regular practice that members are empowered to meet personal and professional communication goals.

Founded in 1924, the organization is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado with approximately 270,000 members in more than 14,200 clubs in 148 countries.

Our club here in Wausau, WI is a modest one, but I want to be part of its growth. I’ve already invited one of my business partners to join me as my guest at our next meeting, as I know it will do wonders for his career. He’s in his early 20s, and boy do I wish someone had encouraged me to join way back when.

I’ll keep you all updated on my journey as I choose my Pathway and tackle the various assignments and independent learning modules included in Toastmasters.

If you have ever considered joining but are on the fence, perhaps this can be what puts you over the edge.
